How We Chose Our Name.
The name Dig My Curl Akitas was decided for two reasons.
One reason and the most important was to honor the memory of our beloved mother, Andrea Schaap, whom passed away after a lengthy fight with cancer. She loved animals and the genetics that is considered when breeding them. She did a lot of research and breeding with the Curly Horse breed and her favorite stallion she owned was a Curly Stallion named Dig My Curl or Digger for short.
So in her memory we used the name she picked out for her horse.
The second reason is due to the tight curl of our one breeding female akita's tail. Pandora had a tight almost double curled tail that she carries high and proudly over her haunches for all to see. It is such a unique trait of her's that we honored her trait with naming our small business after it.
Candace Schaap

I have lived with this loving, loyal and powerful breed since I was 6 years old. With my family I have helped to raise four wonderful American style akitas.
I attended classes at and graduated from Northern College in Haileybury Ontario for Veterinary Assistant, Veterinary Technician, and Veterinary Technologist- Wildlife Rehabilitation.
I currently work as a veterinary technician at the Englehart Animal Hospital, a local vet clinic in the town where we live. I have been employed there there since 2006.
I have also worked on my family's farm for many years helping to raise anything from rabbits, up to horses, and many other pet animals in between.
Gary Schaap

I was raised on a farm, and in a vet clinic as my mother, Andrea Schaap, was a vet and dad was a farmer.
I was able to handle and work with many animals, plus aid in the breeding of Curly Horses with my family.
I came to love Akitas for their personality, character and loyalty.
I went to Kemptville college and study Equine studies, then went on to Northern College and study Natural Resources Technologist.
I drive transport for Manitoulin Trucking and have been with the company since 2006.
